About the Enhanced Rider Scheme

Improve your riding skills and reduce your insurance premium with Enhanced Rider Scheme (ERS) training.

The ERS is ideal if you have just passed your test, are returning to biking after a break or upgrading to a bigger bike.

What is the Enhanced Rider Scheme?

The ERS is training designed for fully licensed motorcyclists like you, who would like to improve certain areas of their riding skills. As training tailored to your needs, you do as little or as much training as required; mostly to help reduce key risk areas in on-road riding, such as bend negotiation, overtaking, filtering, positioning and junctions.

How does it work?
  • Book an ERS assessment with one of the expert trainers on the DSA voluntary Register of Post-Test Motorcycle Trainers (RPMT)
  • The assessment will identify your main strengths and weaknesses but there is no ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ – no test is involved and you cannot lose your licence; if your riding skills are satisfactory, the process ends there, and you will be issued with an ERS certificate
  • If you do need training, the trainer will prepare a personalised training plan and concentrate on the specific areas needing attention, rather than taking an “one size fits all” approach
  • Once you’ve completed your training, you’ll receive a report and ‘DSA Certificate of Competence – Enhanced Rider Bonus’, which then qualifies you for an insurance discount

How can I book an ERS assessment and training?

ERS is delivered by accredited trainers who have met the highest standards of instruction to join the RPMT. For our current list of trainers, go to the ‘Trainers’ link, or call us on 0115 936 6546.

How much does it cost?

The structure of the training is determined by individual trainers. Many courses are run on a daily basis but some trainers prefer to offer shorter sessions. The cost of the training will vary from provider to provider, and often from rider to rider dependent on individual needs. Talk to your local ERS trainers to find the best choice for you.

How do I claim the insurance discount?

Once you’ve completed your training and received your ‘DSA Certificate of Competence – Enhanced Rider Bonus’ contact, one of the insurers offering discounts by clicking on the ‘Insurers ’ link or by going to the ‘Links’ page, both on the ERS site. You will then be able to get a full quote, having stated the name of the certificate.
